4 Class Series Wednesdays June 1, 8, 15, 22.… 12:45 - 4 PM

1. PLANT LIFE: JUNE 1- Participants will be inspired by the graphic shapes and colors of: shiny brown chestnuts emerging from their spiky green pods, wing like tree seed pods, the bulb of an amaryllis, a botanical illustration of a tulip, and a dried poppy seed pod. Techniques including wet on wet, dry brush for shading, gaining control of brush strokes for tight tiny lines and broad single strokes for pods, petals and leaves. This class will emphasize design, cropping and placement of each illustration. The final result will be a poster complete with hand done watercolor type.

2. PABLO & FRIDA + FASHION: June 8 - Marika painted the faces of Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo as an example of how to simplify, using a graphic and stylized technique. The focus is shadow and color, not getting a likeness. A fashion figure in a challenging pose will also be painted; no prior figure drawing is necessary. A simple and easy gridding technique will be demonstrated. This is a wonderful class for someone wondering what fashion illustration is all about. Please feel free to check out Marikas portfolio (fashion, faces and more) : marikahahn.com.

3. PATTERNS…THINK STATIONERY + DESIGN: June 15- Painting decorative lettering with liquid
watercolors and seeing colors flow and blend is magical. Loosely rendered flowers, berries, and geometric shapes will be painted. A simple graphic shape of a bird, butterfly, moth and beetle will be used to ‘frame” the pattern. Participants will be sent images of the critters and can choose their favorite. Please note the image of the patterned bird illustrated for this class. Using thin and thick lines to form ‘grasses’, will be a second project. Brushstroke technique will be practiced to achieve the ‘grassy hillside”. Shades of blue, applied with wider strokes, can create waves.

4. PARIS + ABSTRACT LANDSCAPE: JUNE 22- Only the most important lines will be drawn using a 6H pencil. A demonstration will be done to show simplifying a complicated building, Notre Dame. The  emphasis is on illustrating the contour and using simple strokes of a brush to fill in windows and shadows. References of the Eiffel Tower, Sacre Couer, Notre Dame and the Paris Metro sign will represent architecture. A plate of escargot (snails), macarons, croissants and pastry will be referenced. Maybe great shoes? Participants can draw and illustrate 2 or 3 buildings adding in a sprinkle of their food illustrations. Some may choose to focus on illustrating French food with a simple ill of the Eiffel tower.vThe word PARIS, rendered in color, will be added to the poster. A quick, fluid abstract landscape will be done in sharp contrast to the detail of creating the travel poster.

Before each class, participants receive pdf’s of the images we will be working on in class. If participants can print these, to reference in class, it is helpful but not required.
