This Watercolor Workshop, using watercolor inks, is designed for adults with varied artistic abilities, everyone is welcome. Inks are transparent and colors are easy to mix and flow beautifully. Participants preferring to use watercolor in tubes are welcome to use their preferred medium.

Each week will have a theme, an inspiration. Each class will start with a demonstration showing specific techniques needed to accomplish completed paintings. Wet on Wet, Wet on Dry, Layering/Glazing and Brush Stroke Techniques are part of building your skills. The class approaches watercolor using graphic illustration with an emphasis on composition and cropping.

The process of watercolor painting will be a source of relaxation, expanded creativity and FUN! Before each class pdf’s of the images we will be working on in class, will be emailed. If participants can print these, to reference in class, it will be helpful but not required.

1. RIVER & POND - Monday May 3: The richness and variety of plants and animals that make fresh water habitats their home, are amazing. References of fish, flowers, waterlilies, a bird, nest and eggs, dragonfly, frog and salamander are all possibilities for an illustration. A second project, a detailed illustration of one of the above references done in miniature will look beautiful.

2. HYDRANGEAS & POPPIES - Monday May 10: Painting Hydrangeas uses several watercolor techniques. Each Mop-head Hydrangea is made up of dozens of tiny blossoms clustered together. Each tiny petal has wet on wet color applied and then glazing comes in to layer another soft color. Blues, periwinkles, pale fuchsia and magenta will be lovely to mix and paint. A brightly colored Iceland Poppy with an interesting and challenging to paint center, will be a second illustration.

3. CREATING A FRUIT/VEGETABLE MULTIPLE- Monday May 17: Fruits and vegetables come in wonderful colors and shapes. Citrus fruits, round or oval have a simple easy to paint shape until they are sliced and offer great patterns to illustrate. Asparagus, artichokes, tomatoes…endless possibilities to create a GARDEN MULTIPLE Painting. Using references, we’ll do thumbnail sketches showing possibilities, before beginning to start the watercolor painting.

4. BUTTERFLIES + MOTHS- MONDAY MAY 24: Butterflies and Moths look like magical winged critters from a fairytale. Participants will be emailed references of beautiful, colorful and intricately patterned butterflies and moths for inspiration. An illustration can show several of them with a backdrop of large graphic leaves or a closeup of one or two taking nectar from a Buddleja Bush, Honeysuckle or Verbena.
