Watercolor & Illustration November Series - Online Workshop Series With Marika Hahn

The SERIES (3 classes) : Wednesdays November 3, 10 17 12:45- 4 PM EST (no class the wk of Nov 22)

1. ABSTRACT LANDSCAPES: Nov 3- With a monochromatic color palette, simplified bare trees and mountains, we’ll create a dreamy landscape. Participants have asked for a lesson on painting clouds. A sky with puffy clouds and a scene of frozen wetland and dried grasses will be an interesting second illustration. Aside from landscapes participants will experiment with wet on wet washes, letting colors flow and blend creating patterns. Using a wide #14 or #16 brush and a sprinkling of coarse salt, interesting abstracts will be created.

2. EXOTIC FRUIT ON BOLD BACKGROUNDS: Nov 10- Fruit makes a great subject for watercolor painters. Each image will have a bold bright back ground color. Artists will experiment with colors, on scrap paper, before committing to a color. Participants will sketch a simplified shape of their fruit on paper and decide whether to paint the background first, trapping the subject or, paint the fruit before adding the ground color.* For my sample illustration, I painted a papaya split in half with exposed shiny seeds and gorgeous yellow/orange flesh, I added a light fuchsia background and bright fuchsia hand done type. A Mango will be painted with washes of reds, oranges and other subtle color variations. The knobby yellow/green skin of a Bitter Gourd will present a challenging study in detail and wash. I will demonstrate painting watercolor type which can be added to the art work.

*Using Masking Fluid, also known as Liquid Frisket, will be demonstrated, Participants may want to have this product available, this is optional.

3. WATER LOTUS AND AQUATIC IRIS: NOV 17- Both the Lotus and Aquatic Iris are beautiful. The Iris will be painted in a loose style, creating a representation of the flower rather than a botanical study. Having the work area on a slight slant (a book or two with a cutting board as the ‘work area’ is OK) will allow color to flow within a planned composition. A bit of splattering will complete the finished art work. The lotus is known for it wide showy flowers and upward cupping waxy leaves that can grow two feet across. We’ll practice fine detail with the veins in the leaves. Petals will use our wet on wet skills combined with dry brush for detail. Decorative woody seed pods, in the lotus center, are lovely to paint. They are often used in flower arrangements because of their strong graphics. Two paintings. using different techniques, will be a wonderful class in this series.

Classes are designed for adults with varied artistic abilities, everyone is welcome. Using Watercolor Inks is recommended. Inks are transparent and colors are easy to mix and flow beautifully. Participants preferring to use watercolor in tubes are welcome to use their preferred medium. Each class will start with a demonstration showing specific techniques needed to accomplish completed paintings. Wet on Wet, Wet on Dry, layering/Glazing and Brush Stroke Techniques are part of building your skills. The classes approach watercolor using graphic illustration with an emphasis on composition and cropping.

Before each class, participants receive pdf’s of the images we will be working on in class. If participants can print these, to reference in class, it is helpful but not required.
