Watercolor + Illustration November 2022 Series Online With Marika Hahn

This Watercolor Workshop, using Liquid Watercolors, is designed for adults with varied artistic abilities, everyone is welcome. This medium is transparent and colors are easy to mix and flow beautifully. Participants preferring to use watercolor in tubes are welcome to use their preferred medium. Each week will have a theme, an inspiration. I will start each class with a demonstration showing specific techniques needed to accomplish completed paintings. Wet on Wet, Wet on Dry, Layering/Glazing and Brush Stroke Techniques are part of building your skills. The class approaches watercolor using graphic illustration with an emphasis on composition and cropping.

The process of watercolor painting will be a source of relaxation, expanded creativity and FUN! Before each class pdf’s of images we will be working on, will be sent.. If participants can print these, to reference in class, it will be helpful.

1. CREATING A ‘FABRIC REPEAT: Wed Nov 2- Combining 2 or 3 favorite images, a flower + its leaves, a bird, birdhouse +nest, shoes + items of clothing or accessories or a bathrobe, slippers + toothbrush and toothpaste etc a ‘wallpaper’ will be painted. An image of the wallpaper on an item of furniture, a bed with pillows, shower curtain and bathroom rug, tablecloth and napkins etc will be painted as part of the finished illustration. Participants will be asked to create a secondary fabric to coordinate with the central theme. This is a really fun class and the possibilities are unlimited!

2. EVERY DAY OBJECTS + FOOD AS INSPIRATION: Wed Nov 9- Participants are always encouraged to set aside time to paint in between classes. This class will have us creating what we see around our apartments, homes and dining tables. This illustration can be a favorite breakfast, perhaps a sunny side up egg, patterned napkin and fork, croissant and coffee. Wet on wet and a crisp highlight (area left dry) will have the yolk looking ‘real’. A highly patterned tea cup (illustrating the string and label too) next to a favorite book, even a favorite pair of shoes can be considered a possible reference for this class.

3. CROPPING + CLOSE UP VIEW: Wed Nov 16- The ‘look’ of painting changes by coming in close to the center of an artichoke or other image. This is a useful technique when planning the composition of an illustration. Using a ‘bird’s eye view of peaches in a basket, participants will add light, shadow and practice blending a rosy color onto the peachy color of the skin. A gingham pattern will add interest to a tablecloth. If time allows, a close up view of asparagus bundled with a raffia tie will be a great painting. Adding detailed pink ‘triangles’ to the asparagus, (actually the true leaves called leaf sheaths) will be great for practicing brush strokes.

4. TRANSLUCENT FLOWER PETALS, SLICED PEARS + CUCUMBERS: Wed Nov 30- Flower Petals as translucent as a piece of tissue paper ( or vellum) look like treasures. Painting these fragile petals and capturing the veins and details will use several techniques, perfect for watercolors. Thinly sliced pears and cucumbers with their see through seeds will make this a wonderful class for participants. This is the perfect class to end a series and leave participants wanting more…!
